Karen Corbett: Dramaturge

Karen is a Melbourne playwright, actor, director, educator and dramaturge. Her first play was performed at La Mama 25 years ago. Since then she has won Australian and international awards for her theatre and fiction, including the Jageurs Irish Australian Literary Prize and the Medal of Ulm for her most recent play Orphanage of the Animals. She was awarded the Murray Sutherland Prize for Outstanding Achievement & Contribution to Theatre at Melbourne University and her work has been nominated for two Premiere’s Awards.  She has been training actors for 30 years and has a demonstrated commitment to education and the environment from the earliest years of her career with Arena Theatre, to her own environmental play Ahoy Ms Matilda (that toured schools and Melbourne Zoo) and as a founding member of the Banyule ReThink WasteWise Education Theatre Company, which has won several local and international awards for its environmental education.

Karen founded the first undergraduate course in Script Writing for Theatre in Australia at the School of Creative Arts, at the VCA, (now the School of Media and Communications at Melbourne University).  Karen has taught and mentored a generation of theatre makers including artists such as 4Larks, A is for Atlas, Eagles Nest, Lally Katz, Anna Barns & Angus Cerini.

Karen is facilitating a workshop on Reading for Your Audience, bringing her theatrical expertise to help you read out loud to other people, whether that’s on stage, for youtube, or just telling a bedtime story.
