Fireborn Publishing

Fireborn

Fireborn Publishing is a new experiment in publishing.

First… Take a team of industry professionals, who have worked for multiple indie presses. Make the department heads partners in the business. Give them autonomy, within the limits of their budgets, the ability to set the standard for the high quality they’ve wanted to see in the products we offer. Support each other fully and discuss all major concerns, no less than monthly. Moreover, offer the staff a small percentage of net sales, in addition to a modest salary, to make them active partners in the success of the business. Success means investing in the business first and raises for the staff secondary.

Then… Agree to be as responsive as we can be to concerns of staff, readers, and authors. Whether owner-staff ultimately decide the idea proposed is workable or unworkable, every suggestion will be given due consideration.

Finally… Build the business with the long-term aim of cooperative community as part of the matrix.

Our Mission Statement… We intend to be the best publisher we can be. We will deal fairly with our authors and our readers, be responsive, and offer the best product we can, at reasonable prices. Fireborn Publishing is a staff-owned business with a cooperative mindset. The collective owners will put the authors first, the growth of the company and reader relationship second, and ourselves last.

As a bonus, we’ve invited authors submitting to us to give us their free reads to post and spotlight. It’s a good way for readers to get to know our authors and their work without financial risk. Remember that these are not technically Fireborn books, but we encourage our authors to build their audience however we can, and that includes helping them distribute their free reads, when we can.

Afternoon Tea: Meet the Publishers

pocket-watch-books_600

When: 4:00 PM Sunday 19th of April
Where: The Mercure on Therry Street
Tickets: $25/$20

*Please Note that due to catering we must close off bookings on the 13th of April and there will be no tickets at the door.

Publishers, as the world knows, have long lunches, lazily spend time with their feet up reading through amazing books which people send them for free and jealously guard the gates of publishing from amazing aspiring writing talent who have at least one amazing book in them.

Publishers, as anyone in the industry knows, have found that the days of long lunches are over, that it’s harder to get talent noticed in an increasingly crowded marketplace, and wading through the ever growing slush pile in the hope of finding the next gem is both a draining and exhausting prospect. And please don’t mention delicate writer egos.

Following the success of last year’s Meet the Publishers Panel, we’re bringing along more publishers and giving you all a chance to meet, mingle chat and maybe even pitch a story or two over tea, coffee and nibbles on a casual Sunday afternoon. Book your ticket now for this limited entry event or grab a festival pass and come and meet publishers and editors from Clan Destine Press, MidnightSun Publishing, eXtasy Books, Little Raven, Fireborn Publishing, Dreamspinner Press, Wayward Ink Press, Stein & Wilde Publishing, Dark Matter Zine and Writing from Below Journal.

More Events? Sure

Q Tile

So if you’ve been paying attention to our program page, you’ll have noticed we’ve been switching around panels, as well as playing with times as we try to organise the best possible line up of events for you. We’re very excited that were able to bring back both of last year’s stand out evening events–the Queermance Anthology Launch and the Queerbaret, but we’re also very pleased to be bringing you an Author Showcase of some of the biggest local and interstate authors at Queermance 2015, including a very special international guest. Who is it? Well, you’ll just have to wait and see!

We’re also bringing you a fifth panel, which we weren’t expecting, and we’re going to be celebrating some of the amazing art that we use to support our stories, whether that’s digital art, painted media, or amazing photography. We’ll be bringing you a selection of the amazing work in our community soon, and there may be the chance to walk away with a print or two.

Given our late morning start, we’ll be providing two meals rather than three — lunch and afternoon tea–and turning the afternoon teas into social events where you’ll be able to come and meet the Queermance Authors and an even bigger range of publishers than we had last year. We’ve currently confirmed Clan Destine Press, Dreamspinner Press, MidnightSun Publishing, Firebrand Publishing and EXtasy Books and we’re in discussion with a few other publishers about having a presence at Queermance this year.

And no, we’re not increasing our ticket price. So if you’d like to get a festival pass, day pass, or book yourself in to just the Meet the Authors or Meet the Publishers Afternoon Tea, book in before we sell out. We’ll be releasing single session tickets to our panels and workshops shortly, so stay tuned for more info.

Alison Todd: Editor

AlisonTodd

Alison discovered a talent for editing when her health prevented her from working on a regular, scheduled basis. Since May 2010, she has have worked as an Editor, Editor in Chief, and Acquisitions Editor, and currently works as an editor (content/body and line/copy) both for Fireborn Publishing and on a freelance basis. She also write reviews for Top 2 Bottom reviews in an attempt to give back to the industry and lower her monthly expenditure on books, which her sister, who she lives with, thinks is far too high. As well as meeting up regularly with fellow MM readers in Melbourne, she is a semi-active part of AQRM (Australasian Queer Romance Meets).

Her reading habits are extremely varied, although at the moment she is mostly focused on the M/M genre and has recently begun to enjoy F/F and trans*. If you put a book in front of her, no matter the genre, it is almost certain she will at least take a look at the blurb. If pressed for an answer, she would say her favourite genres are science fiction, paranormal, futuristic and fantasy.

Alison will be representing Fireborn Publishing at the Meet the Publishers Afternoon Tea on Sunday.

You can find Alison on Facebook, Twitter @AToddMann, and on LinkedIn.
