MidnightSun Publishing

MidnightSuninversmono-M

MidnightSun Publishing has grown out of a disenchantment with the established publishing houses in Australia. We know there are plenty of fabulous manuscripts about unusual topics floating around, but publishing new and unknown writers poses a big risk. MidnightSun is prepared to take that risk. We want our readers to be entertained. We want to challenge, excite, enrage and overwhelm. Therefore, we publish books in any genre that have touched us in some way.

Publisher Anna Solding, author of The Hum of Concrete will be representing MidnightSun Publishing at Queermance this year. You can find her at our Meet the Publishers Afternoon Tea, our Queer Identities panel and at our Sunday night Author Showcase.

It was nominated for People’s Choice Award, the Most Underrated Book Award and the Commonwealth Book Prize. She has co-edited a collection of stories, Cracker! A Christmas Collection, and has worked as fiction co-editor for literary magazine Wet Ink. Anna has had many short stories and reviews published; she has been awarded two Arts SA grants and she will this year spend one month at Arteles Writers’ Retreat in Finland and one month at the Katharine Susannah Prichard centre in WA furthering her writing. Popular speaker and workshop co-ordinator, Anna is regularly engaged to speak at Writers’ Festivals and she has conducted workshops at the SA Writers’ Centre, Burnside Library and Salisbury Writers’ Festival. Anna currently works as editor and publisher at MidnightSun Publishing in Adelaide. She is passionate about punctuation and chocolate.

Publishers, as the world knows, have long lunches, lazily spend time with their feet up reading through amazing books which people send them for free and jealously guard the gates of publishing from amazing aspiring writing talent who have at least one amazing book in them.

Publishers, as anyone in the industry knows, have found that the days of long lunches are over, that it’s harder to get talent noticed in an increasingly crowded marketplace, and wading through the ever growing slush pile in the hope of finding the next gem is both a draining and exhausting prospect. And please don’t mention delicate writer egos.

Following the success of last year’s Meet the Publishers Panel, we’re bringing along more publishers and giving you all a chance to meet, mingle chat and maybe even pitch a story or two over tea, coffee and nibbles on a casual Sunday afternoon. Book your ticket now for this limited entry event or grab a festival pass and come and meet publishers and editors from Clan Destine Press, MidnightSun Publishing, eXtasy Books, Little Raven, Fireborn Publishing, Dreamspinner Press, Wayward Ink Press, Stein & Wilde Publishing, Dark Matter Zine and Writing from Below Journal.

More Events? Sure

Q Tile

So if you’ve been paying attention to our program page, you’ll have noticed we’ve been switching around panels, as well as playing with times as we try to organise the best possible line up of events for you. We’re very excited that were able to bring back both of last year’s stand out evening events–the Queermance Anthology Launch and the Queerbaret, but we’re also very pleased to be bringing you an Author Showcase of some of the biggest local and interstate authors at Queermance 2015, including a very special international guest. Who is it? Well, you’ll just have to wait and see!

We’re also bringing you a fifth panel, which we weren’t expecting, and we’re going to be celebrating some of the amazing art that we use to support our stories, whether that’s digital art, painted media, or amazing photography. We’ll be bringing you a selection of the amazing work in our community soon, and there may be the chance to walk away with a print or two.

Given our late morning start, we’ll be providing two meals rather than three — lunch and afternoon tea–and turning the afternoon teas into social events where you’ll be able to come and meet the Queermance Authors and an even bigger range of publishers than we had last year. We’ve currently confirmed Clan Destine Press, Dreamspinner Press, MidnightSun Publishing, Firebrand Publishing and EXtasy Books and we’re in discussion with a few other publishers about having a presence at Queermance this year.

And no, we’re not increasing our ticket price. So if you’d like to get a festival pass, day pass, or book yourself in to just the Meet the Authors or Meet the Publishers Afternoon Tea, book in before we sell out. We’ll be releasing single session tickets to our panels and workshops shortly, so stay tuned for more info.
